Just over one week ago, 110 people, most of them between the ages of 18 and 30-something, returned to their homes after a refreshing weekend of mutual edification and time in God’s Word. By all accounts, the third-annual Building Tomorrow’s Church conference was a wonderful success. Not even the cool, wet weather of Prescott, Arizona, could dampen the warmth of the fellowship between these like-minded brothers and sisters, many of whom sacrificed time and money to make it for the weekend. Conference attendees Anita, Catherine, and Joshua Baines traveled all the way from Maine to be with the brethren at BTC 2010 and listen to keynote speakers Raymond Perron and Don Donell preach on the topic of “The Church and Missions.” Others traveled from Massachusetts, Tennessee, and South Carolina in the east, and California and Oregon in the west. First Baptist Church in Clinton, Louisiana, sent the most young people with 14 attendees this year. Other churches in Bremen, Indiana, Mansfield, Texas, and southern California also sent large groups to this year’s BTC conference.
</ br>
The 110 conference attendees represented more than 25 different Reformed Baptist churches from 17 states. More importantly, though, these 110 people represent both a legacy and a future for Reformed Baptists in North America.
</ br>
A Legacy
Many of the young people who have participated in past Building Tomorrow’s Church conferences are second and third-generation Reformed Baptists. My brother Paul and I are examples of just such people. Our parents were exposed to the doctrines of grace shortly after being converted to Christ. They raised us with the understanding of Scripture’s authority and the Reformers’ and Puritans’ influence. To us, “doctrine” isn’t a dirty word. We have fond feelings towards catechisms, confessions, and creeds. Many young people like us know and love the great hymns of the church and we understand that reverence and order are essential to right worship. Most importantly, we learned from our upbringing in a Reformed Baptist home that everything we do should be done for the purpose of glorifying God (1 Corinthians 10:31, Soli Deo Gloria). This is the legacy our parents have left.
</ br>
A Future
It is clear through their lives and conversations that most of the young people at the Building Tomorrow’s Church conferences are sober-minded believers. By their own admissions, they are seeking to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ, in full submission to His mission. Many of the BTC conference attendees are already members in their local churches; more are future members. Raised with a biblical understanding of reality, these young believers are the future of our churches; they present older saints with a hope for our churches when they are gone. Though few are seminary-trained and not all college-educated, they are nevertheless Reformed Baptist theologians in their own right because they have learned it from their parents and now own it for themselves. The purpose of BTC is to encourage the young people in our Reformed Baptist churches to continue in the fight for Truth that their parents have fought; to continue in the project of Kingdom-building in which their parents had labored. As Titus 2 encourages the older saints to teach the younger, through BTC we encourage attendees to be both the teachable younger brother or sister as well as the older saint who disciples. As we heard Robert Briggs say at BTC 2009, it’s not an “either-or, but a both-and.”
</ br>
The legacy left by Reformed Baptist parents and pastors is seen in the lives of their children and young people. The future of Reformed Baptists is viewed also in these same people’s lives. Like a spiritual relay race in which one generation passes the baton of Truth to the next, our generation is responsible to preserve and promote and pass on the good deposit that has been entrusted to us. As God keeps us faithful to Him and His mission, may we stay true to the truths of His Word and the lessons learned from our fathers and churches. May we continue in the work of building the Church today for tomorrow.
</ br>
Please keep the following requests in your prayers:

That God would be glorified in every part of our weekend together.

That those who are travelling long distances to and from the conference will travel safely and without difficulties.

That God would give Pastors Don Donell and Raymond Perron power from on high as they preach the Word.

That God would encourage the young adults who attend the conference through the messages and fellowship.

That God would encourage the brethren in the churches back home through the Christians who return to continue in their service to the Lord.

That God might raise up the next pastor, missionary, or church planter through this year’s conference.

We are continually amazed at what God has and is doing through this annual conference. Please pray for BTC 2010.
</ br>
Lately I have been working on preparations for two back-to-back weekend conferences and have had little time to think about blogging. So for this week, I’m going to pull a Tim Challies and share some miscellaneous links.
</ br>
Please be in prayer for these two conferences hosted by my home church, Grace Covenant. This coming weekend, July 30-August 1, many from our church family will be heading to the cool(er) Oak Creek Canyon just outside of Sedona for our annual Family Camp. Pastor Robert Cole will be preaching God’s Word to us. The following weekend, August 6-9, over 100 Reformed Baptist young adults from across the country will be assembling in Prescott, Arizona, for the third-annual Building Tomorrow’s Church conference. Please be in prayer for Pastors Raymond Perron and Don Donell as they focus our thoughts on what the Bible says about missions.
</ br>
The Local Church and Evangelism – Speaking about gospel missions, I appreciate that the brothers over at Reformed Baptist Fellowship posted this wonderful article by Erroll Hulse. The topic is a timely one, especially for those of us who will be attending BTC’10.
</ br>
Jason Helopoulos on Good Reasons for Moving On – Over at Kevin DeYoung’s Gospel Coalition blog, Heloploupos shares some helpful thoughts for both church members and elders on the topic of “Good,” “Possible,” and “Insufficient” reasons for leaving a church and moving on.
</ br>
Andy Naselli on Confrontation – DeYoung also had Andy Naselli guest post for him recently. Naselli uses a hypothetical example of two men, “Mr. Confronter” and “Mr. Blogger,” and illustrates with biblical principles how to receive criticism from a brother.
</ br>
28 years ago today Keith Green died. – Although he went to be with the Lord about a year before I was born, I grew up listening to singing along with Keith Green cassette tapes. As the author of this article states, “Keith certainly didn’t get everything right. He didn’t have great things to say about Reformed theology, although some of his song lyrics show that he was more reformed than he may have realized (see “You Put This Love in My Heart”).” I think Green’s life and his ministry through music serve as another important reminder to us that God uses various men with various theological views in various ways to bless the Church for His glory and praise.
</ br>
And finally, in case you haven’t heard, the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith & the 1695 Baptist Catechism (Leather-Bound Hardcover Edition) is now available. Get yours today from Solid Ground Christian Books!
</ br>
And finally, just one year ago this month, 6 men (who have come to be known as the “Ardent Cries Guys”) got their act together and started this blog. Happy One Year, brothers!
Pro 26:5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.

However, Cornelius Van Til pointed out the vitality of these two verses as a summary of presuppositional apologetics. As Greg Bahnsen summarizes Van Til’s apologetic: “In the first place, the unbeliever should not be answered in terms of his own misguided presuppositions; the apologist should defend his faith by working within his own presuppositions. If he surrenders to the assumptions of the unbeliever, the believer will never effectively set forth a reason for the hope that is in him. He will have lost the battle from the outset, constantly being trapped behind enemy lines . Hence Christianity’s intellectual strength and challenge will not be set forth. But then in the second place the apologist should answer the fool according to his self-proclaimed presuppositions (i.e., according to his folly). In so doing he aims to show the unbeliever the outcome of those assumptions. Pursued to their consistent end presuppositions of unbelief render man’s reasoning vacuous and his experience unintelligible; in short, they lead to the destruction of knowledge, the dead-end of epistemological futility, to utter foolishness.” (Greg Bahnsen Always Ready, Covenant Media Press, 1996) p.61-2

Clearly, Deepak’s “belief” as summarized in the video clip above that “all belief is insecurity” is utter foolishness as his questioner reveals. It reminds me of those who ardently argue against absolute truth, using the very same absolute truth terms. Their blindness is both humourous (as the clip above demonstrates) but at the same time profoundly sad because so many millions are deceived by similar teachings which the Apostle Paul says “suppress the truth in unrighteousness.” May God have mercy on them and may His people grow in our understanding of truth as well as our empathy for the lost.

In 2004, while training as a ministerial student, I had the privilege of preaching an assigned doctrinal-topical sermon on the imputed righteousness of Christ. Though the sermon and its delivery bore the obvious marks of a novice preacher struggling to grow and develop, the doctrine itself was nevertheless glorious. What child of God can hear such words as “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Cor. 5:21) and not be moved in the very depths of his blood-bought soul!

For me personally, the theology of that particular study led to doxology in a most unexpected way. The fruit of that particular study led to the writing of a song. The lyrics are set to the public domain tune used for The Church’s One Foundation. This song is being shared with the hope that you will be renewed in your ardent love and zeal for the One whose one act of obedience resulted in justification of life to all men (Rom. 5:18).

Christ, Our Righteousness (tune: The Church’s One Foundation)

Through Adam’s one transgression death came to all the race

The hope of life then perished and judgment took its place

The cherubim were stationed to bar the holy tree

Unrighteousness and sorrow became man’s legacy.

Yet, in that darkest moment of mankind’s greatest need

God intervened in mercy by promising a seed

A suf-fer-ing Deliv’rer would crush the serpent’s head

while offering up obedience in fallen Adam’s stead.

In vain do sinners labor and trust in deeds they’ve done

To satisfy God’s justice we need the Righteous One

The Sacrifice unblemished, ordained to bleed and die

in resurrection glory now lives to justify.

O marvelous reversal, the sinless One made sin!

The curse of Law is broken for those who enter in

By grace through faith receive Him–the Son that we adore

who grants to over-comers the tree of life once more.

We’ll revel in our Savior, the precious, spotless Lamb

when dressed in white apparel before the judgment stand

We’ll boast in none but Jesus, no works will we profess

but rest forever, only, in Christ our Righteousness.

Tales of missions and missionaries were commonplace stories at bedtime or at the breakfast table in the Giarrizzo home. I remember fellowshipping with David Straub in our home on various occasions, listening to his stories of the spread of the Gospel to faraway lands, and being amazed by this man who would eat an entire apple—everything but the stem. (Rumor has it that ARBCA’s current coordinator also eats whole apples, core and all!) I remember attending RBMS missions banquets at Cornerstone Bible Church, even singing a duet with my brother at one of these conferences. As children, my brother and I knew who our missionaries were because we were taught to pray for them often.
</ br>
I think I was in fifth grade when I went as a missionary for Career Day; I basically dressed like my dad on Sunday mornings and carried my Bible around all day. But there was a time in my life when I seriously wondered if God would someday call me to be a missionary to a foreign land, be it Australia or Hollywood. Since then, however, God has taught me more than I deserve to know about His Word, the Gospel of His Son, and His means of saving His elect throughout the world.
</ br>
Ironically enough, even though I have never lived more than 13 miles from the house I grew up in, God has shown me still that I really am called to be a missionary.
</ br>
In about two weeks from now, at this year’s Building Tomorrow’s Church conference for Reformed Baptist young adults, the emphasis will be on missions and how it relates to the local church, ultimately to each one of us individually. Although I grew up understanding the definition and importance of mission work, I had trouble really grasping my part in the work of missions. And I have a feeling I’m not the only one to experience this. At BTC’10, attendees will here from two men qualified to teach others about the biblical reasons for missions and the practical application the subject has on the lives of everyday church members. Pastors Raymond Perron and Don Donell will be bringing two messages each to help conference attendees synthesize the biblical doctrine of evangelism with personal practice. (To view the session titles, click here: BTC 2010 Messages)
</ br>
Please pray that the Lord of the harvest might be pleased to instill in the lives of those who attend BTC 2010 a sincere and lasting desire to see Christ’s kingdom grow; a yearning so strong that maybe even one person from this conference will be used of God to bring a sinner to repentance and faith.
</ br>
May the words of this song ever be a prayer in our hearts, our homes, and our churches:
</ br>

Let Your Kingdom Come

Your glorious cause, O God, engages our hearts
May Jesus Christ be known wherever we are
We ask not for ourselves, but for Your renown
The cross has saved us so we pray
Your kingdom come
</ br>
Let Your kingdom come
Let Your will be done
So that everyone might know Your Name
Let Your song be heard everywhere on earth
Till Your sovereign work on earth is done
Let Your kingdom come
</ br>
Give us Your strength, O God, and courage to speak
Perform Your wondrous deeds through those who are weak
Lord use us as You want, whatever the test
By grace we’ll preach Your gospel
Till our dying breath

[On Friday of this week, July 16th, two Ardent Cries bloggers—Chad Bennett and myself—will celebrate 5 years of marriage to our wonderful wives. In light of that occasion, here is a short review I wrote about a month ago of Piper’s recent book on marriage.]
</ br>
In a world where subjectivism, relativity, and personal feelings reign supreme, God has blessed some men with the wonderful ability of cutting through culture’s philosophical garbage heap and explaining the truths of God’s Word in a powerful, unambiguous way.
</ br>
In my opinion, John Piper is one of those men.
</ br>
His name has become a common word in the YouTube search field of many “New Calvinists.” His sermons have been downloaded and listened to on thousands of iPods. His books have been a blessing to Christians from differing denominational affiliations around the world. And it’s no wonder why Piper has become so well-known. Piper—alongside men like Sproul, MacArthur, White, Mohler, Dever, Horton, etc.—is telling the truth about God, His Son, His Word, and His world. It’s clear by his preaching, teaching, and writing that Piper get’s the Gospel; and it’s clear he wants others to spend their lifetimes getting the Gospel too. So I respect John Piper for being right about the most important things in Christianity.
</ br>
This Momentary Marriage
</ br>
Like all humans, however, Piper has his shortcomings. Some of Piper’s doctrinal flaws are readily apparent in his book, This Momentary Marriage: A Parable of Permanence. This work is a vivid example of Piper’s theological hits and misses interlaced within the same binding. I want to take the rest of this opportunity to briefly outline some of those hits and misses. I’ll start with the points of disagreement between Piper and myself (and truly, between Piper and a great number of others beyond myself) simply because I want to end on a positive note. For all of the positive statements that I want to make about this book, I am first compelled to highlight the negative aspects of the book because Piper devotes so much of his ink to them.
</ br>
Misses
</ br>
The Thesis—

“…therefore, the highest meaning and the most ultimate purpose of marriage is to put the covenant relationship of Christ and his church on display. That is why marriage exists. If you are married, that is why you are married. If you hope to be, that should be your dream.”
</ br>
With these words from chapter one, Piper establishes his central point and lays the foundation for the rest of his book. But the problem with this thesis is that while marriage does indeed reflect the relationship between Christ and His Church, in the beginning, when God created Adam and Eve and instituted marriage, He said nothing about marriage reflecting the covenantal love between Christ and His Bride. Instead, God said something specific about His purpose for marriage in Genesis 2:18: “Then the LORD God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.’” Companionship, then, was God’s purpose for marriage.
</ br>
The reason this distinction is so important here is because upon this foundation Piper builds his argument against all cases of divorce and any possible allowance of remarriage. As Reformed Baptists, however, we do not make the same conclusion about the purpose of marriage. To quote our Confession: “Marriage was ordained for the mutual help of husband and wife, for the increase of mankind with a legitimate issue, and for preventing uncleanness” (LBC 1689 25:2).
</ br>
Divorce and Remarriage—

“Whether you agree with me concerning the grounds of divorce and remarriage or not, I pray that we will all recognize the deepest and highest meaning of marriage—not sexual intimacy, as good as that is, not friendship, or mutual helpfulness, or childbearing, or child-rearing, but the flesh-and-blood display in the world of the covenant-keeping love between Christ and his church.”
</ br>
Piper spends two of the final chapters of his book laying out his argument against divorce and against remarriage after divorce. Piper himself has admitted that he holds a “radical, narrow” view amongst believers on this topic; in fact, Piper’s view of remarriage after divorce is not even the held position of his church. Nevertheless, he holds to his view strongly and explains it in part in chapters 14 & 15 of This Momentary Marriage. One of the strongest lines emotionally in chapter 14 is also one of the weakest lines logically: “Therefore, if Christ ever abandons and discards his church, then a man may divorce his wife. And if the blood-bought church, under a new covenant, ever ceases to be the bride of Christ, then a wife may legitimately divorce her husband” (p 159). Using this poor premise Piper continued to construct an invalid conclusion about the Bible’s position on divorce and remarriage.
</ br>
Other Thoughts—On a non-theological level, I felt that This Momentary Marriage was pieced together from a series of different topics under the umbrella of the theme of marriage. While the book made sense, it just wasn’t as fluid as I hoped it would be.
</ br>
Additionally, I felt as if this book could have been a lot shorter. Here’s what I mean: The amount of time Piper spent on reasserting his thesis (The purpose of marriage is to represent the covenantal love between Christ and the Church) and summarizing a previous chapter at the beginning of a new chapter was truly excessive. Piper is a naturally gifted communicator; and summary and recap is often important in asserting a specific point; but I felt like I was reading the same things over-and-over without much expansion on the original idea. In other words, Piper should have tried harder to keep it short and sweet.
</ br>
Hits

“There never has been a generation whose general view of marriage is high enough. The chasm between the biblical vision of marriage and the common human vision is now, and has always been, gargantuan. Some cultures in history respect the importance and the permanence of marriage more than others. Some, like our own, have such low, casual, take-it-or-leave-it attitudes toward marriage as to make the biblical vision seem ludicrous to most people.”
</ br>
A High View of Marriage—In light of the poor arguments Piper presents, mostly on the topic of divorce and remarriage, what I really appreciate is Piper’s high view of marriage and low view of divorce. I appreciate this about the book because that’s the view I see presented to us in God’s Word.
</ br>
“Staying Married Is Not Mainly about Staying in Love”—What a wonderful way to start a book on marriage. I think it was this chapter’s title (chapter 1) that first enticed me to read the whole book. There is so much truth packed into that statement.
</ br>
Husbands and Wives—As expected, Piper does a fine job dealing with the roles of husband and wife in marriage. He lays out the biblically-defined roles of headship and submission, wraps each with the understanding of Christ-like love, and encourages Gospel-centered living within the home.
</ br>
Singles and Married Couples—To be honest, I was a little surprised to see a chapter in a book on marriage devoted to a discussion about singles and singleness; but I think that’s the point. Piper acknowledged that many married couples in the body of Christ are in need of a greater awareness for the non-married within the flock. Essentially, this part of the book served as a reminder to show love and hospitality to others in our churches.
</ br>
The Gospel—Finally, I wasn’t at all surprised to see how much of the message of the gospel Piper infused into this book. I am thankful for Piper’s ability to focus our eyes on Christ and a God-centered view of married life. For all of this book’s flaws, it still has much to offer to married believers.
